Although it is true that sapphire crystal is more intense than mineral glass, Shellman had first used mineral glass for Grand Complication because it was easy to handle and shape into the desired curve. However, due to improvements in techniques, it became possible to create the desired curve with sapphire crystal and it is now used in Shellman Grand Complication.
