Although it is true that sapphire crystal is more intense than mineral glass, Shellman had initially used mineral glass for its Grand Complication because it was the only way to be obtained in domed form. Due to improvements in technique in recent years it became possible to fit the domed sapphire crystal now used on Shellman’s “Grand Complication ”.
