Since the very beginnings, mechanical timepieces
have always come with "sound".Various inventions
for telling time such as bell towers of cathedrals, mechanical
clocks like cuckoo clocks and present-day alarm clocks have
told people the time by sound. Although the size of these timepieces
has been sometimes miniaturized, the mechanism for telling
time has been developing.
Collectors have always been attracted to watches with minute repeaters
because they are produced by a handful of gifted watchmakers and
of extremely high quality, and probably also due to the fun-loving
nature of collectors who want to be able to tell time with a variety
of different sounds. "Side Slide" watches with its unique
square-round design that ring when a lever is pressed down, have
especially fascinated collectors, and are called "Hikiuchi," Japanese
for "pulling and striking." |

Shellman Side Slide Minute Repeater, which possesses two
types of chimes, one to inform users of the hour and the
other the minute, revives the mechanism of the world's first
quartz movement.
The sound of the repeater synthesizes three different frequencies
and recreates the traditional mechanical sound of Minute Repeaters.
Also, the minute repeater of Shellman Grand Complication plays a
faster tempo that is similar to the mechanical sound.
The minute repeater is conventionally controlled using a lever rather
than a button. Shellman Side Slide Minute Repeater not only recreates
the appearance of the traditional watch, but also feels exactly like
one. |
